A man has been arrested for removing his mum’s body from her grave at a Spanish cemetery and driving her coffin home in his car.

He told an investigating judge today after spending a night in a police cell that he just wanted to check she was really gone because her death three days earlier had occurred so suddenly.

He was examined by a psychiatrist following his detention yesterday who concluded there was no reason to admit him to hospital and ruled he could be hauled to court.

The surreal episode occurred yesterday between 1pm and 3pm in the La Carriona municipal cemetery in the Asturian town of Aviles.

Witnesses informed a local priest after the dead woman’s grown-up son marched up to the funeral niche where she had been laid to rest yelling she had been taken from her home ‘without permission.’

He then proceeded to remove flowers from the tomb and put her tombstone on the ground before smashing a brick partition protecting the coffin and dragging it to his nearby parked car.

Shocked onlookers are said to have tried to dissuade him from his extraordinary action. But he reportedly reacted by asking them for help before placing the coffin in the boot of the vehicle where he had already lowered the back seats so it would fit in and driving the two miles to his home with it.

Police found him and his dead mother at the property, still in her casket, and arrested him before returning the coffin to the cemetery so it could be put back in its final resting place.

Shortly afterwards a judge ordered it to be removed for a second time, this time with a warrant, and ordered police to formally identify who was inside and take pictures so the corpse could be checked for any damage.

The woman’s bearded son, who has only been referred to by his initials R.A.D, was photographed in local press around midday today being led into court in handcuffs flanked by two armed police officers.

He was released about an hour later after being questioned by a judge and told he could visit his mother at the cemetery where he removed her body yesterday.

But he was also warned he remains under investigation and could end up being charged with grave desecration.

He declined to make any comment as he left the court in Aviles with his lawyer.

It was not immediately clear why his mum had died or how old she had been when she passed away.
